Nordic Mission&Stench From Below, 27 & 31.10.17
Let's kick off carefully with a short release, dropped almost a year ago, both independently and through two Norwegian labels. Flukt (meaning Escape) is a relatively fresh black metal band from Vennesla, north of Kristiansand, Norway. The band has undergone four years, producing four releases, evenly distributed between singles and EPs. Throughout these years the band has expanded from duo to quartet. Fortapelse (meaning Damnation) is a short EP of two songs and eleven minutes. The guys nevertheless show muscles and a plethora of potential.
In fact, Flukt seems to be granted the ability to write cold, hateful and dreadful riffs. Even as soon as on the debut-EP Holocaust (2015) one can find a compositional glow that is largely absent in the detested generic sphere that appears to dominate in scale. The As Above So Below single from the same year, and the Sadist single from 2016, anew display a hungry, bloodthirsty and hostile band capable of combining violent black aggression with grim moods.
As the compositional qualities are already present, Fortapelse doesn't take a big step forward, but rather remains a verification of stable quality. My only point of appeal is the vocals, which seems a bit dry and hissing to my taste. Something that is solely based on subjective preferences, yet also something I don't have any bigger issues with. The soundscape has a “self-made” touch without sounding thin and fragile. With its charming lack of polish, the sound rather gives associations to early attempts from various acts in the early Scandinavian extreme metal scene.
The EP consists of the songs Fortapelse and As Above So Below. Song two originate from the single with the same name, but sounds more powerful in this new take. Something that-witch suits the mighty and dark moods that gradually unfolds. Here you will find a wonderful range of pitch black tricks up the sleeve. Torrents, slow and calm dystopia, flaming maelstroms and raging disgust.
Rather than force-feeding you details about the songs' conduct, I leave you to listen and judge for your self with the stream below.
